EU-Turkey Relations in an Era of Differentiated Integration

Beken Saatçioğlu is a Professor of International Relations at the Department of Political Science and International Relations at MEF University, Istanbul. She received her MA (2003) and PhD (2009) degrees from the University of Virginia (Dissertation title: “How Does the European Union’s Political Conditionality Induce Compliance? Insights from Turkey and Romania”). Prof. Saatçioğlu served as a post-doctoral fellow at Freie Universität Berlin’s Kolleg-Forschergruppe (KFG) Research College “The Transformative Power of Europe” (2009-2010), and the Centre for European Integration Research (EIF) in Vienna (2010-2011). She participated to the 2016-2019 Horizon 2020 FEUTURE (“The Future of EU-Turkey Relations: Mapping Dynamics and Testing Scenarios”) project where she helped coordinate the final work package and contributed (as first author) to the FEUTURE final synthesis paper “The Future of EU-Turkey Relations: A Dynamic Association Framework amidst Conflictual Cooperation”. She has published extensively on EU-Turkey relations, EU political conditionality and Europeanization. Her other research interests include differentiated integration, EU enlargement, EU migration policy and Turkish politics. She is the co-editor (with Funda Tekin) of Turkey and the European Union: Key Dynamics and Future Scenarios, Nomos, 2021.
Prof. Saatçioğlu was awarded the Jean Monnet Chair by the European Commission for her EUTURDI project in August 2020. Jean Monnet Chairs are funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme, and are dedicated to promoting excellence in teaching, debate and research on the EU. Under EUTURDI, Dr. Saatçioğlu has acted as the Chairholder, academic coordinator and principal teaching staff member.
